drew this while watching ‘one planet’ on netflix.
trying to get faster (and looser, obviously) with watercolor so i’m going to keep doing more of these tv sketches and keep dropping my standards
(tv sketch definition: sketch done while the tv is on)
inktober and linktober 2019 continue with day 7: enchanted
inktober and linktober 2019 continue with day 6: husky
as i continue to struggle with the drawing of day 5: build, i’m moving on to day 6. only a day late.
for all of you inktober purists out there, here’s today’s strip in glorious black and white
if you’d like to see the comic in majestic color, please click here
i think the gag is solid, but man, panel 3 was a lost oppotunity
i should have pushed the pose more
(hangs head in shame)
(shuffles solemnly back to the drawing table)
inktober and linktober 2019 continue with day 4: freeze
can you spot what link is missing in panel 3? seems like i forget to draw something every day.
i didn’t have any ideas going in to fit the the prompt, but i read about the freezors, and once i started getting the pencil moving the gag came to me
i’m a little more satisfied with the gestures today
i also realized i’ve been casting my little guy as link this whole time
i didn’t love link’s poses in yesterday’s comic, so today i tried to push them a little bit more – make them more natural
here is today’s comic with a little color
even more importantly, when posting my comic to instagram yesterday, i discovered that linktober was already a thing!
you can follow linktober on instagram or visit them at their website
linktober continues
jake parker’s inktober 2019 official prompt: mindless
penciled this piece 2 days ago
felt less than confident about it
inked it late last night after my soccer game
hated it. told myself i’m going to throw it out in the morning
in the morning i looked at it again and accepted it. (after adding a lot of correction fluid)
added watercolors. felt better about it
but if the original is too pricey, you can check out the cleaned up, digitally colored version where i remembered to color link’s hair pink (WHY IS LINK’S HAIR PINK IN ‘LINK TO THE PAST’?)
a sh•••y prowler ink and watercolor sketch based on my memory of the character from the new spidey-verse movie. go see it. it’s so good
here’s the first panel of day 8 in the 30dayscomics challenge
little guy’s got a rubber band
30 days of comics continues with a new steps strip
it’s been so long
i’m still struggling with the watercolors
and those first two poses were too similar
but it was a fun moment where little guy was all involved in painting one moment and then completely distracted the next
i mean, seriously, the best thing
sheesh
in the journal is posted
it’s been awhile since i’ve done one of these
i did it in digital first
but then decided i need the practice so i drew it in ink and watercolor
as you can see i ran in to some lettering trouble in panel 2
here’s a look at the first version of yesterday’s steps strip
i hated it when i got done with it
the son character was too difficult to distinguish from the background
i tried a lot of different things to get the background to ‘fade back’
first i tried erasing it (you can see where the paper tore and i had to repair it with tape)
then i painted over it with white watercolor
the strip really looked like a mess to me, and i couldnt stand the sight of it, so i decided to redo it
i’m glad i did, because the second ‘published’ version fits in to the look of the other steps strips better
but now i love the look of the first version (how did that happen?)
i love the messiness – it could be a good look for a future project
here’s a look at the strip earlier in the process
looking at it now, i realize that this would have worked too
all i really needed to do was darken the kid to separate him from the tv and tv stand
i think  i panicked while working and fumbling with the watercolors
one of the things i need to do better is remember to slow down while i’m working
it’s been so long since the last one
but a new ‘steps’ strip, ‘potty training’, is up
almost every other ‘steps’ strip has been done in digital, pushing pixels around
but today’s is fully scribbled in pencil, with lots of (kneadable) erasing, then brushing down puddles of watercolor, and finally a bit of inking
if this is the first ‘steps’ comic you’ve happened to catch
what i like about working digitally is not having to see my mistakes for very long
i can get through more bad drawings faster
but posting old work on screentone is giving me a chance to get back in to the brushes and inks and paints
here’s a few stages from a piece last night
felt so clumsy and missed that undo button
but stuck with it long enough to push through some of those feelings and doubts and wanting to quits
on the next one i need to SLOW DOWN – be more patient – have a lighter touch
(and if you can’t tell what’s going on in this sketch, and who could blame you, the dad is installing a little urinal for potty training)
(also: look at that terrible drawing of a toilet. just look at it. it is so squat and fat. sheesh.)
check out previous watercolor attempts here
i thought i would come back and do more to this sketchbook page but i probably never will so i might as well post it
as i read lynda barry’s syllabus, i continue trying to capture moments and get out of my uncomfortable zone to my more uncomfortable zone with watercolor
pencil, watercolor, 2017
i just kept drawing since i was never happy with the result. I’m still not happy – but deadlines.
added some watercolor to some of the rejected versions because i should learn watercolor too probably.
inktober 2017, pencil, ink
I’m working from jake parker‘s official inktober 2017 prompt list, but within the world of Sherlock Holmes.
